7 truly passive income ideas you probably havent considered
7 truly passive income ideas you probably havent considered7 truly passive income ideas you probably havent consideredMaking money while you sleep has a nice ring to it. I mean who wouldnt want to be making some extra money while playing with the kids or while watching a game? The only problem is that most passive income ideas that youll come across are truly not passive at all. Since youre already busy with your everyday life you wont want to pick up a 2nd job that you dont have time for. Most passive income ideas require you to put in a lot of work. For example, a lot of people online tout starting a blog as a good source of passive income.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe only problem is that blogging is a lot of work. I runThe Finance Twins, a growing personal finance blog, and my brother and I easily spend 50-60 hours a week writing, marketing, and researching for new conte nt. leid exactly passive. The truth is that to truly generate passive income youll need to make aninvestment into an assetthat produces passive income for you. Unless you are making money the old-fashioned way (inheriting it), youll need to put in some effort.Starting something from scratch will never be passive from the get-go because the act of starting it will be very time consuming and rigorous. And thats okay if you have the time to devote to it.The good news is that you dont necessarily need a new cash outlay either. If you already have an asset that isnt being fully used then that can serve as your investment. Check out the details below to learn more.Today, lets talk about a few passive income ideas if youreready to investand make your money work for you instead of losing value in a bank account.7 Best Passive Income IdeasPassive real estate investingAcquiring an affiliate marketing websiteRenting your primary home via Airbnb or another platformRenting your carInvest in divid end stocksRun a site with display adsRefer friends to great products you already use1. Passive Real Estate InvestingWhen it comes to passive income, talk to anyone whos a landlord and theyll tell you that passive is the last word theyd ever use to describe having to replace a washing machine after a full day of work. However, there are a hr of companies that give you the ability toinvest in real estate projectswithout having to actually do any of the heavy lifting yourself. One example isDiversyFund. Its a private REIT (real estate investment trust) that allows you to invest in professional real estate projects passively foras little as $500. The thing I love about companies like DiversyFund is that they dont make money unless the investors make money since they invest and manage the projects themselves. When incentives are aligned, you give yourself the best chance to win.2. Acquiring Affiliate WebsitesI already discussed how starting a website from scratch was no easy undertaking (un less you know what you are doing and have done it before). So why not find an existing site that is already making money from affiliates and take it over?Affiliate marketing is essentially where you get paid a fee for referring new customers to brands. So for example, if you have a site likeContacts Compareor Kayak.com that compares prices, you can earn a commission for referring customers to existing brands. This type of investment can be truly passive if its already generating revenue with very little hands-on involvement.3. Renting your Primary Home viaAirbnbI was recently contacted by a long-time reader who had just received her first passive income check in the mail and she was ecstatic. She was a single mom of two daughters and her youngest had recently gone off to college. She had always dreamed of running a bed and breakfast but never had the time to devote to it. But once she became an empty nester, she realized she had two empty bedrooms she could rent out to guests. After si gning up forAirbnband jumping through the hoops she was able to rent out her rooms for $50/night each. In fact, she said shes considering moving out to a smaller space and renting out the entire home since its in an in-demand area of Fort Worth, TX. She said she is making enough money to hire a neighbor to handle the clean-up duties, so its as passive as can be.Not bad4. Renting your CarCompanies likeTuroand GetAround are making it easier than ever for you to rent out your car when you arent using it. And lets face it, if you live in an area with Lyft and Uber service, theres a chance you might not even need your own car on a daily basis.Youll want to keep in mind that you renting out your car will mean additional wear on your car so your repair bills might increase, but users have said its well worth it for the passive income checks coming in the mail.If you have a 2nd car sitting around that never gets used or you have begun to bike to work and no longer need the car daily, this m ight just be the absolute perfect way to finally start generating some passive income.5. Invest in Dividend StocksDividends are profits that are paid out to owners of stocks. Some companies pay dividends on a regular schedule, which means it can become a solid source of income.Investors who love dividend stocks will talk about the fact that your investment is not only generating dividend income but potentially also appreciating in value. But its good to remember that the opposite can also happen.Dividend stocks are similar to other stocks in the sense that its usually best to buy and hold for a long time. Some people even rely on dividend checks for their regular expenses, which means they must own a pretty large number of shares If you have some extra cash to invest this is probably something worth looking into.6. Run a Site with Display AdsIf youve spent any amount of time on major sites like ESPN, The Weather Channel, Google, etc., then youve seen lots of advertisements on them. I f you dont remember seeing ads, then you either have an awesome adblocker or youve simply learned to ignore them. NiceAs you can imagine, the reason these sites haveads on displayis that they are being rewarded handsomely in order to do so. The key to generating income in this way is to have a site with a lot of users since there is a strong correlation between the number of eyeballs on your website and the amount of income youll be making. Easy enough to understand. If you have a friend with an old site that they never use it might be worth acquiring it if they have traffic. Adding ads to a site is super simple and you could be earning some passive income pretty quickly.7. Refer Friends to Great Products you Already UseCompanies likeEbates.comhave existing referral programs that pay out cash for every friend you can refer. If you have a lot of friends or social media followers this can be an extremely easy way to earn money. All you have to do is set up an account usingthis link, go to your account settings and click where it says refer and earn to get a link you can send your friends. To find other programs like this its super simple. Nearly any company that delivers food or other products will usually offer something like this. They are called referral programs so a simple search will make it obvious who offers a similar program. The Bottom LineAs I mentioned before, generating truly passive income requires creativity and some initial work to set things up. Especially if you are already super busy. But if you are able to pull it off, youll be the talk of the town because youll be making money while everyone else is breaking their back. This article originally appeared onThe Money Mix.

Will Company-Wide Volunteering Work for You
Will Company-Wide Volunteering Work for YouWill Company-Wide Volunteering Work for YouAs a recruiter youre always looking for strategies that will help you improve your employees working experience without adding to your bottom line. And when it comes to recruiting and building loyalty, unusual benefits like paid volunteering are increasingly popular, especially among the coveted Gen Y demographic. So when Deloitte surveyed hundreds of corporate managers at companies with thousands of employees and found that 64 percent of them feel confident that corporate citizenship produces a tangible contribution to the company bottom line, it became fair to wonder what the impact of a giving program would be for your company.Whether youre interested in offering volunteer time-off programs or company-wide volunteer days, your questions remain the same Do these programs impact morale? Are they seen as a perk by employees? Are there any tangible geschftliches miteinander benefits?Heres a look at th ree important things to understand about company giving trends and whether they can help you figure out if theyre right for your company.1. Company Giving Helps Attract and Identify Promising New Recruits There are two distinguishing characteristics that make the practice of company giving especially valuable to companies looking to recruit younger employees.PriceWaterhouseCoopers found that 88 percent of Millennials gravitate towards companies with established volunteering programs or corporate social responsibility programs.Offering a company giving program, whether that means volunteer time off or company-wide volunteering events, indicates to prospective hires that youre interested in their personal growth and who they are outside of their job description. With an established company giving program, youll not only attract more Millennials, but youll also have a better chance of keeping them.Company giving can also help you identify top performers in terms of attitude in the work place and willingness to give of their time. Both individual volunteers and company-wide volunteering can help you better understand what drives a candidate or employee and identify performance markers for more strategic and long-lasting promotions.2. Company Giving Gives an Added Edge to Diverse EnvironmentsWith the ever-increasing emphasis on diversity in the workplace, youre working hard to create a team of individual members with different backgrounds, perspectives and experience. But while diversity helps you remain competitive in your industry, it can also lead to a more isolated or hesitant workspace simply because the only thing they have in common is an employer.Company-wide volunteering provides an opportunity for your employees to come together and achieve a common goal that isnt related to job functions or history. Youre providing a no-pressure zone for building common ground and learning to work as a team. When you sponsor company-wide volunteering days youre creating a new, shared history for your diverse employees. Employees come together outside of the usual business hierarchy and see that they can build something in common.3. Company Giving Wont Heal a Hurting EnvironmentJust one word of warning with all of the positive growth associated with company giving, dont think that company giving is a panacea for an increasingly toxic workplace. If you have serious problems to work through, such as high turnover or low morale, company giving programs will only worsen those feelings of resentment and discontinuity between what your employees really need and what you are willing to give them. Youre better off investing resources to improve communication and morale within the workplace than offering elective volunteer opportunities. If youre considering whether or not to include company giving as part of your companys paid benefits, theres no one right answer. If youre looking to help a good team get better or create common roots among a new team, then com pany giving will definitely reap productivity rewards. But it certainly wont solve any ongoing problems in the workplace. At the end of the day, the answer is much the same as applying any other new ideas for your work environment its up to each HR professional to decide whether or not its a good fit.Read Related ArticlesMake Candidates an Offer They Cant Refuse

Employee Recognition Tips to Boost Morale and Productivity Robert Half
Employee Recognition Tips to Boost Morale and Productivity Robert Half Employee Recognition Tips to Boost Morale and Productivity Robert Half Your employees are far more likely to stay with your company if they feel their efforts and contributions are valued and appreciated. Recognizing employees for stellar work is also vital to maintaining morale and boosting productivity. Here's how to show high-performing team members that their dedication and hard work is making a difference: Employee recognition strategies Say it like you mean it. There is no better way to inspire employees than by offering your sincere gratitude for their efforts. But don't give praise just for the sake of giving praise. Your attempts at employee recognition will backfire if an employee doesn't consider your communication heartfelt. Publicize achievements. One of the best ways to recognize employees is to spread the word about noteworthy individual and team accomplishments during meetings or in emails to your entire company. Again, it's all about communication. Explain the bigger picture. People tend to work harder when they know that their work matters. To help your staff feel more personally invested in the success of the organization, share information about the business and how standout efforts contribute to the company's bottom line and overall goals. Support employee goals. Consider offering to pay a portion of an employeeâs education costs or organizing training and development opportunities for staffers. Foster connections and leverage expertise. Formal and informal mentoring programs can make senior staff feel that their experience is valued, while helping more junior employees get their footing. Offer flexibility when feasible. If it works for your business, consider allowing trusted employees to work more flexible schedules or telecommute part of the time. Flextime and telecommuting can be among the best employee benefits with the lowest costs for employers. Think about your workplace environment. Do you promote appreciation within the workplace? Office culture has a big effect on employeesâ morale and performance. Managers can set the style for a culture of mutual appreciation that brings out the best in everyone. Treat everybody once in a while. Employee recognition doesnât have to be about singling someone out for superior performance. Did everyone on the team pitch in to land an important client or meet a big deadline? Consider taking the whole team out for lunch or giving them a half day off. Employee recognition can be a key part of an overall strategy to promote good company values and help employees feel invested, motivated and happy to come to work each day. Tags

New Features for Participants Make ASME.org More Engaging Than Ever
New Features for Participants Make ASME.org More Engaging Than Ever New Features for Participants Make ASME.org More Engaging Than Ever New Features for Participants Make ASME.org More Engaging Than Ever A recently added feature on ASME.org automatically pulls information such as a page title, a text sample or page description, and an image into to a Participant's activity stream when that Participant shares a link. Since the launch of the new ASME website last May, the web development team has been busy working on enhancements to the ASME.org community that will make using the site a more engaging and interactive experience for registered ASME.org Participants. Registration with ASME.org, which is free and open to ASME members and nonmembers alike, enables Participants to create personal profiles, connect with other engineers with similar interests, set up personal Dashboards, and join and follow various ASME Groups. In addition, however, registered ASME.org Participants can also take advantage of many enhancements that have been made to the sites community space during recent months. For instance, when a Participant shares a link in his or her Dashboard or in a Groups activity stream, ASME.org now automatically pulls information including the pages title, a sample of text from the page or the pages description, and an image into to that activity stream from the linked page, thus allowing users to quickly learn more about these links. Another site enhancement enables Participants to link to a YouTube or ASME video in their Dashboard or Group activity stream and have that video automatically embedded in the stream. This allows registered Participants to play and share videos without leaving their Dashboards. An example of a video embedded in an ASME.org Participant Dashboard. Participants can also now directly reply to items shared on Dashboard or Group activity streams. Comments appear directly in the activity stream and are visible to all Participants who can view the original item, resulting in increased interactivity and community engagement by allowing conversations to take place around shared items. Another new community feature permits registered Participants to quickly re-share items they are viewing using their Dashboards or Group activity stream. If a member of your network shares a link that appears in your dashboard, simply clicking the share command beneath the item will allow you to share this item with your network, along with any comments you may have entered. Copying and pasting the links URL is no longer necessary to re-share, so its now easier than ever to share information with other members of the ASME community. Participant Dashboards also now feature default filters that remove such items as friend updates and file upload messages from the activity stream. This allows more important, engagement-oriented activities such as shared links, uploaded photos and status updates to be featured more prominently in the activity stream. Participants who wish to see the filtered items can view them, however, by clicking a check box. Visit www.asme.org now to register and begin exploring the exciting new developments on ASME.org.

10 Steps to Setting and Achieving Goals at Work
10 Steps to Setting and Achieving Goals at Work 10 Steps to Setting and Achieving Goals at Work 10 Steps to Setting and Achieving Goals at Work Make goal-setting an ongoing practice. Setting goals at work is an interesting balancing act. On the one hand, your workplace goals must support the company mission. On the other hand, they must be your own. Otherwise, goal-setting is just a rote, check-the-box exercise. An additional complication is that certain companies (and managers) are better at helping their employees set and achieve work goals than others. The good news is that even if you work for someone who approaches the annual goal-setting session as a necessary evil, there are things you can do to get some value out of it. If your manager genuinely understands the power of goal alignment and setting and achieving goals, you have a great opportunity to use the conversation as a starting point for career growth. Here are 10 things to keep in mind before setting goals at work and filling out that goal sheet. 1. Get clarity on your team's structure. First things first you must understand the functions and interrelationships of your team in order to set workplace goals that will make your team more productive and helpful to the rest of the organization. In a practical sense, every team serves as a supporting unit and a consumer of support at the same time. Get the mapping right, and you will be able to identify specific and measurable things you can do better to help processes and projects run smoother. 2. Talk to your boss. What can you do to make their job easier and make them look good? No matter what your job description says, your job is really all about making your manager's life easier. Think of it as an opportunity to be of service. Having a frank conversation about how you can support your boss will go a long way towards defining your workplace goals. 3. Focus on what you can control and have a plan for the rest. For every workplace goal, there are factors you can control and factors that are out of your hands. Be clear on the distinction, and have a plan for what to do if the out-of-your-control factors don't line up. Imagine that you are a supervisor within an accounting department in a hospital. Let's say you set a goal to shorten the month-end close timeline by 2 business days. Success will depend on the skill and collaboration of your accounting department (something you can contribute to and control), and on the ability of other departments to deliver critical data on time (something that is out of your control). It is smart to have a plan to coordinate the month-end close with other departments, remind them of the deadline and keep the communication lines open but you must have a plan and an accountability agreement in the event they fail to deliver. 4. Think about your career path in the long run. What is your ideal next professional role? What qualifications and skills do you need to qualify? Which success stories will make you a suitable and impressive candidate? Line up your personal goals for work in a way that allows you to gather those accomplishments and learn the skills. 5. Go beyond immediate tasks and think of the big picture. Your growth as a professional is bigger than productivity and proficiency at your desk! Career progression often requires a broad scope of skills and experiences. Add professional seminars and other educational opportunities to your goal list, because continued learning is critical to your ability to expand your responsibilities and get promoted. If you would like to move into a VP or a C-suite role in the future, consider looking at rotations in other departments. The knowledge of how different parts of the company fit together will prove useful and may set you apart from competing candidates. Finally, if you see yourself growing into a management or client-facing role, Toastmasters is a fantastic way to sharpen your public speaking skills. Related:Set Goals That Really Matter for Your Career 6. Get clarity on what goal achievement would look like. You know the basics: a good workplace goal is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Go beyond those basics and visualize what goal achievement would look like. Would it make a particular project flow easier? Would it allow the team to work together more effectively? The image of a goal achieved will keep you motivated. 7. Schedule periodic check-ins. The act of setting work goals is not limited to one conversation at the start of the performance period. Any plan must be flexible in order to retain its usefulness, and professional goals are no different. Sit down with your manager to talk about status and progress throughout the year. These conversations can be formal and regular (at the end of every quarter) or more ad-hoc. No matter which frequency you choose, the important thing is to keep the communication channel open, so that your goal plan can adapt to reflect today's reality and priorities. 8. Ask for support if you need it. Superstar performers in sports and at work don't have to do it alone. Moreover, they know that they can achieve more and do it quicker with the help of a mentor or a coach. If you wanted to get better at golf, you would probably hire an instructor who would help you improve your swing. Your career is no different. Look for allies, both within your company and outside of it, and build a network of professionals who care about your success. Talk to them, ask for advice and listen carefully. 9. Do a periodic comparison of your annual goals with your to-do list. Setting goals at work is great for mapping out big-picture targets and wins for the year. The unfortunate reality is that fire-drills and urgent reassignments can make it difficult to focus on the things that everyone had agreed were important. Continued professional education is a good example. Everyone knows it is valuable for your expertise and proficiency. It is also a requirement for retaining many professional certifications and licenses. However, continued education so often falls by the wayside because of client demands, deadlines and last-minute assignments. If you have ever had to cram a year's worth of education credits in the last three weeks of the year, you are in good company. So, do a periodic check of how well your daily to-do list aligns with your big-picture workplace goals. If the two have nothing to do with each other, talk to your manager and take action. 10. Track your accomplishments. We have all been there as you're preparing for your annual evaluation (or revising your resume for your job search), you draw a complete blank on your past accomplishments. You know you have been busy, and your manager is generally happy with your work, but you cannot name a single specific success over the last year. The lesson here is that it can be difficult to recall success details at the end of the performance period. After all, you have a full year of projects to think through! Save yourself the trouble and keep a running list of your wins (a simple Word or Excel document will do just fine). List everything from meeting regular deadlines to stepping in to help with an urgent research project, to completing successful client pitches and presentations. In closing, remember that setting goals for work is best when it is an ongoing practice. Do yourself a favor and treat it as a conversation that never stops. Every time you get a new assignment, ask your manager to clarify expectations. What does he hope to accomplish through your work? Where does he anticipate difficulties? What is the timeline, and why is this project important? After the project is wrapped up, have a conversation to debrief and talk about what went well and what could have been done better. Many professionals are apprehensive of performance discussions, but the truth is that you can only get better if you know what skills and habits need more work. Keep the communication lines open, and you will set yourself up for more interesting work and a faster career progression in no time.
