Create one quickly with this template:eval Required elements are bolded, the rest are recommended where relevant: Salutation,eval Name Tagline Title(s), Organization Association Membership Phone numbers (mobile/land/fax) Website/Social media profiles Image Do you currently have an attention-getting email signature? Where: Salutation â" using your email signoff to onlysay goodbye is a wasted opportunity. Either use an expression that's relevant to your personal brand or wish the person something positive. The best result is a combination of both that doesn't sound too cheesy. In my email signature, I usually say âTo your job search successâ. Name â" your full name. Tagline â" your personal branding tagline Title(s) â" if employed, use your current job title. If you're currently unemployed, list your profession and add âavailable for full-time employmentâ. Organization â" the organization you most associate yourself with, typically your employer, a professional association you're prominent in, or your own company. Association Membership â" any professional or industry-related association that you are a member of, worth mentioning especially to people whoare likely to recognize it. Phone numbers (mobile/land/fax) â" just put the one number you want to be reached at; some people include both their landline and mobile/cellphone numbers, but that's overkill. If you have a compelling reason to include more than one number, put each on its own line with a label to indicate which it is such as âTel: 555-1234â and âCell: 555-5678â. If most people who contact you are on Skype and you prefer it, use the Skype callto: syntax so that calling you is just one click away. Website/Social media profiles â" use the one url (at least) that most builds your personal brand i.e. is most likely to impress viewers. This might be your blog, your organization or association membership profile (see above), social media resume or one of your social media profiles. At minimum, list your LinkedIn vanity url. If you're not sure which urls to use, list 2 or 3 but use a url shortener such as bit.ly that lets you customize the shortened url while also counting the clicks so you can measure which url people clicked more. Check the click statistics after a month of usage and then decide which urls to leave in your signature. Like with LinkedIn, use your Facebook vanity url if you decide to include your Facebook profile in your email signature. Important: include âhttp://' in each url in your email signature so that the recipient's email software will automatically make the url clickable. Image â" of all the items on this list, an image is the riskiest thing to include in your email signature because it will increase the download size of every email you send (and many of the replies you receive) and will often get flagged by email software as a potential security issue, increasing the chance that your email won't even be seen by the recipient. However, if you are willing to take the risk, it will be because you have a memorable image to show, a brand-relevant imagethat best represents you, such as your personal logo, a picture of your latest book or other product if you have one, or even your avatar. I know that if I want to reach my full potential and do what I love, I must constantly be looking to expand and further my network. Personal Branding Interview Keith Ferrazzi - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke with Keith Ferrazzi, who is the New York Times bestselling author of Never Eat Alone, one of the most connected individuals on planet earth and his new book is called Whos Got Your Back. In this interview, Keith gives us some of the bigger ideas in his new book, such as how to choose the right people, how to keep in touch with contacts, how to find people who have your back and much more. Keith, is it possible to be successful without a support system in place? What Iâve seen, in both research and my work with clients, is that a deep support system is what separates the merely good from the truly great. How do you choose three people that you know will have your back? Thereâs a filtering process that I discuss more in the book, but basically you need to find people who embody the Four Mindsets: generosity, vulnerability, candor, and accountability. These are individuals who are generous enough to commit to your mutual success; vulnerable enough to establish trust and an intimate connection; candid enough to tell it like it is, even when you donât want to hear it; and able to follow through to consistently hold you accountable. As you grow older, how do you hang onto old connections, without having them drift? You might remember âpingingâ from Never Eat Alone â" regular check-ins is the best way to keep relationships strong even when you have big gaps between seeing each other. Of course, in the years since Never Eat Alone, the Internet has provided no shortage of mainstream pinging machines â" Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Geni, and so many more. Creating structure around your relationships is also a great way to avoid âdriftâ â" monthly dinners, weekly movie nights, an annual weekend retreat together. You might also launch a Whoâs Got Your Back style accountability group, to turn your closest friends into Lifeline Relationships â" deep, intimate relationships with people who are mutually invested in each otherâs success.) If you want to build a powerful brand, how much would you emphasize networking? Networkingâs not a term I like, because to so many people it means schmoozing. I donât advocate schmoozing to build a powerful brand. I advocate connecting â" developing genuine relationships that give you permission to have a continued dialogue. Itâs in that ongoing dialogue that you start building your brand. Embracing generosity and the other three mindsets I describe above will give you a strong foundation to start with. You say that the lone businessman model no longer works, but isnât that what we are taught in school and what we see in the workforce? If not, how is this changing? From the Industrial Revolution and on, when organizations were structured in such a way that people were cogs in a giant system, the core mindsets that support lifeline relationships â" generosity, vulnerability, candor, and accountability â" werenât so important. These traits were even devalued as behaviors and mindsets that suggested weakness or failure. This is a new economy. Weâre moving out of the industrial age, maybe even moving out of the Information Age into what some, starting with Dan Pink, are calling the Conceptual Age, in which emotion, empathy, and cooperation are critical success traits. Id venture to go ahead and call it the Relationship Age. Weâre at a incredible moment when technology and human interaction are intersecting and trust, conversation, and collaboration are top of mind and top of agenda â" weâre all Twittering about it! We need new skills and new information. We are no longer cogs. And on top of all that, what we want is changing too. Personal joy and satisfaction are gaining sway over material things or status claims as our chief hallmarks of success. All of this requires that we, as individuals and as a society, relearn core values and mindsets that weve lost to some degree. Again these are vulnerability, generosity, candor, and accountability. How do we go about finding these people who have our back? Those people are all around us. Of course thereâs a filtering process, but it all starts with making a choice to recognize that youâre surrounded by insightful people who you could care about, and who could care about you. You just have to open yourself to the reality that theyâre there to help. Would you rather have a network of 5,000 people or 5 close contacts? Why? 4 Ways to Get the Recognition You Deserve Ask employers what they value in their staff, and they will reel off traits such as âhigh achievingâ and âhard workingâ. But when it comes to actually valuing such qualities, employers seem to be falling short: 65% of American employees say they have received no recognition for good work in the past year. If youâre a member of this unappreciated majority, youâre probably feeling frustrated. After all, working hard is hard work, and when your efforts arenât valued it can be difficult to stay motivated. Moreover, when promotions, pay rises and other benefits are linked to performance, the fact that nobody is recognising your achievements can be detrimental to your career prospects. Luckily, there are ways to increase the amount of recognition you receive. Next time youâre feeling unappreciated at work, try implementing the following steps: Be Your Own Cheerleader Chances are, your boss and colleagues are busy people. Consequently, they are unlikely to be aware of everything you do on a day-to-day basis, and may not have personally observed many of your successes. Stop expecting them to be psychic, and bring your achievements to their attention. Many people shy aware from doing this because they think itâll be perceived as boasting. But as long as you get the tone and delivery right, youâll come across as confident, not arrogant. When youâre debriefing a project, for instance, talking about how you overcame problems and which aspects of your efforts worked well is constructive as well as self-congratulatory. Similarly, if you receive a complimentary email from a client or colleague, you should ask them if they mind passing the feedback onto your boss (or forward the email yourself). Accept Compliments Think back to the last time someone complimented you on something. How did you react? Itâs win-win. Set Up Regular Reviews with Your Boss If you donât currently have regular catch-ups with your manager, take the initiative and set them up yourself. During these meetings, ask your boss to help you set quantifiable targets and KPIs. By laying out expectations in advance, you can better highlight the great work youâre doing when you hit and exceed your targets. Moreover, these regular reviews give you a platform from which you can showcase your achievements to your boss. A good manager will use your sessions to give you candid feedback on both your strengths and weaknesses. Because the meetings will push your boss to regularly reflect on your strengths and successes, your manager is likely to become more appreciative. But discussing your struggles and shortcomings is also a path to praise if you take that feedback on board and work to improve them. If you can show progression week by week, youâll make a highly positive impression on your boss. Recognise Others Before you bemoan the lack of appreciation doled out by those around you, take a second to assess how much praise you give out on a daily basis. Taking the time to notice and recognise the efforts and achievements of your peers isnât just the right thing to do â" it can also kick-start an appreciative culture where praising others for great work becomes the default. The one simple rule to remember when admiring others is this: be sincere. If you swan around handing out compliments like candy people will simply write you off as a sycophant, and your praise will stop holding any value. Instead, look out for those times when your colleagues do go above and beyond and produce really stellar work. Edward Mazria (pictured), 70, Architecture 2030, Santa Fe, NM An award-winning architect in Santa Fe, Mazria had a 40-year record of innovation and advocacy in sustainable building. But even he was surprised when in 2002 his analysis of U.S. government data revealed that the building sector consumes approximately half of all energy production and causes about half of all greenhouse gas emissions each year. In 2003, Mazria founded Architecture 2030 to change those practices. The group issued the 2030 Challenge a set of benchmarks for reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment (buildings, homes and other man-made structures) to carbon neutral by 2030. The American Institute of Architects, U.S. Conference of Mayors, U.S. Green Building Council and National Governors Association immediately adopted the challenge. Legislation followed.
